Retired domains might sound like a fuzzy concept, but they basically refer to web domains that were once active but have since lapsed or become inactive. Think of it as real estate online where the property’s there, but the owner just isn’t using it anymore, through the passing away of the previous owner or the company being bought bought out by a rival in the same business. Either way it is sitting there doing nothing.
So why do domains get retired? It could be as simple as someone forgetting to renew it, or maybe the site owner decided to switch domains for branding reasons. Sometimes, businesses merge or cease operations, leaving their domains in the dust.
From an SEO point of view, retired domains can be a mixed bag. A domain that had good standing can boost your site’s visibility, but you can’t ignore the chance of inheriting negative SEO factors too. Ensuring the domain doesn’t have any toxic backlinks or spammy history is crucial.
My history with a Retired Domain
After 13 plus years of on and off trying to get an Affiliate Marketing Business going, I did manage to get £30.00 to £50.00 a month from a UK tool, Garage, and Construction Equipment (Something I know about) affiliate marketing website that showed who sold a particular item at the lowest price. Ebay or Amazon or any other website. You might want to take a look https://comparepowertools.co.uk/
That website took three months to build, (there was no AI then) and with 746 products took a lot of maintenance, because as an item was sold out by a seller on eBay or Amazon a new seller had to be found.
It was earning £30.00 to £50.00 per month, which has dropped to £10 to £20.00 per month but it is not the way to go and I would not recommend this type of website to anyone. If you think you can do better then here is the plugin I used called Content Egg, which was being sold on https://www.keywordrush.com/
What content Egg does is as the prices on eBay, Amazon etc go up and down Content Egg adjusts the prices and availability on your website.
For All of the Reasons Above
I looked for a mentor and I am not ashamed to say that up until 18 months ago I have been scammed out of more money than I have earned looking for a Mentor.
I typed into the Google search box “Affiliate Marketing Tuition” and right at the top of the organic results the was a website and URL called exactly that. But when I clicked it lead to a blank page.
After cursing for a bit a light bulb went off in my head and it dawned on me that that this must one of the legendary “retired domains” That was the best bit of luck I have had all year, because the domain was over 10 years old, a big deal for SEO.
But I still need a Mentor and after signing up with the most appalling charlatans and being scammed out of a considerable amount of money, before I found Wealthy Affiliate. I was wary of them at first thinking they were the same as others I got involved with, but they did not ask for any money up front so I thought I’ll give it a go. And they have been very good for me and I can highly recommend them.
Retired Domains
Is the real subject of this blogpost. I realised I had been lucky falling on this URL by accident, but if I had not where would anyone go to find a retired domain.
Purchasing an older domain can help with SEO, however the value of doing so relies on a number of factors:
Benefits of Older Domains:
Developed Authority: Older sites may have accumulated credibility and authority, which helps improve their search engine results.
They frequently include pre-existing hyperlinks, which, if they are high-quality and pertinent, can increase traffic and SEO.
Brand awareness: A domain may have some beneficial brand awareness if it has already been used for a respectable brand.
Historical Traffic: Some older domains could continue to get organic traffic, which might be advantageous right away.
Things to Think About Before Purchasing a Retired Domain:
Reputation and History: Use resources such as Google Search Console or Wayback Machine to examine the domain’s past. Make sure there is no history of spam or fines associated with it.
Relevance: The domain must be pertinent to your industry or specialty. Your SEO efforts might not be aided by a site that has a long history in a different industry.
Backlink quality: Utilize tools like as Ahrefs or SEMrush to analyze the backlinks. Pay more attention to the caliber and applicability of these links than their mere number.
It seems there are many companies selling retired domains some of which will jump start your business. Some are asking ridiculouly high prices, but some are not. It is well to look for a retired domain that meets your purposes before trying to dream up one in my humble opinion
A good Place to Start is SEO.Domains as they are sensibly priced
Another Good one is Atom Domains also sensibly priced
