I had been building this website for quite a while now view the results on Google Chrome, when one of my friends said “try viewing on the Safari Browser” To my horror the menu does not render properly, and what should be a horizontal menu is now a vertical menu at the top of the screen. This now takes up all the screen. Not only that, to add insult to injury the menu does not work.
Since Safari Browsers are 8.99% of the world use of DESKTOP browsers, that is an awful lot of people the your site is wasted on; hundereds of Millions in fact. Or so it seemed
Then a little bit of research on the Apple website says that the Safari Browser will only work correctly on Apple Hardware. My friend was running the Safari Browser on a P.C. with Microsoft windows. Panic over.
Microsoft Internet explorer (Internet Exploder as developers cruelly called it) is now replaced by Microsoft Edge.
That incident prompted me to investigate further into the subject of browser rendering and check out the world percentages of users of the most popular browsers. And it pans out like this:
Desktop Browsers
- Chrome 64.72%
- Microsoft Edge 13.36 %
- Safari 8.99%
- Firefox 6.53%
- Opera 2.91%
- Others etc
Mobile Browsers
- Chrome 66.96%
- Safari 22.84%
- Samsung Internet 4.26%
- Opera 1.91%
- UC Browser 1.24%
- Firefox 0.53%
- Others etc
They all render slightly differently, with Chrome being almost 100% correct but with a missing logo. I am sure that I can correct the missing logo so I’ll live with just the tag line (top left) acting as a home button for the time being. The Menu works OK and is sticky. And the right Side-Bar which carries the “Recent Posts” and “Recent Comments” works OK is sticky as it should be.
My advice would be to go through the most popular Browsers and see what your website looks and functions like, especially Desktop Chrome which has 66.96% of the Market and Mobile Safari which has 22.84 (55.21% if you take the USA alone)
The problems with other browsers usually are:
- Pictures not being seen at all
- Pictures being doubled
- Menus not functioning correctly
- Links not functioning correctly
- CSS problems
I have done this on each page by hand so to speak, and it took a long time, but there is software about out there that can speed this process up and tell you what to correct. If any one has any experience of it I would be grateful to know.
I am also a beginning affiliate marketer and have seen many sites that never load properly for me. I am on a Apple product 100% of the time and use either Safari or Chrome! I do get a little bit of exposure to Edge on my job and don’t have much control over what I use because our Corporation controls just about every aspect of our work devices on the floor! The 2 major things I see with all browser is pictures not loading and links not working! But it really makes you question the functionality of a website you are building with so many browser options!
Hi John
I think you and me need to get one of these programs like this one
https://testingbot.com/
I have done all 38 pages and posts on each page by hand, but I still think I do NOT have it correct.
If you have not too many pages each page by hand might be the best way to go until you get past your 50 posts as recommended by the guys at Wealthy Affiliate.
Hi,
Thank you for sharing your experience! I can totally relate to the frustration of discovering that a website doesn’t render properly on different browsers. I had a similar experience when I was working on a project and realized that the site looked perfect on Chrome but had major issues on Firefox. It was a real eye-opener about the importance of cross-browser compatibility.
Your advice to check the most popular browsers is spot on. It’s amazing how different browsers can interpret the same code in various ways. I also appreciate your mention of software tools that can help speed up the process of checking and correcting these issues. They can be real time-savers!
Thanks again for the great insights and for sharing your journey. It’s always helpful to hear about real-world experiences and solutions!
Thanks Jay
The worst one was the old Micosoft Internet Explorer. There are still people using that. Devolopers didn’t laughingly call it Internet exploder for nothing. The replacement Microsoft Edge is not much better
